Why praise a book that makes life miserable?

I was really looking forward to this book. National Book Award Nominee for Young People's Literature (2008), A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year (2008), ALA Teens' Top Ten (2009), etc. etc. How could they get it so wrong?!
