Will demographics lead to a return of traditional values?

Brian Lilley | 20 Sep 2009

An interesting book is out by Dr. Brian Lee Crowley, a Canadian economist who sees Canadians returning to traditional values as our population shrinks in coming decades. Titled Fearful Symmetry: The Fall and Rise of Canada's Founding Values, Crowley's book says that with lower birth rates and tougher competition for immigrants, Canadians will eventually return to the founding values of the country, including family and hard work.

Russian demographics, the debate continues

It appears Michael Cook isn’t alone in paying attention to Russian demographic trends. The Daily Telegraph in London is hosting an online supplement on Russia from Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Writer Sergei Balashov takes on the issue of Russian depopulation, not from a position that this issue will change Mother Russia into a frozen caliphate but that Russia’s declining population will leave few workers to care for the elderly or the young.

Demography for Democratic majority? Not really....

Brian Lilley | 15 Apr 2009
I’ve been fascinated by demographics for years, first learning of their practical application during a foray into the world of arts marketing, learning how to sell theatre tickets by looking at people’s life stages, income, or background.

There are good, solid uses of demographics to forecast trends, and then there is the ridiculous. Often, the ridiculous uses have to do with politics.

Cars, family size and demography

As Michael Cook likes to say, demography is destiny, maybe someone should start a blog about that….hmmm. Anyway, Mark Steyn is another person who says the answer to many questions and problems lies with demography. The other day, over at National Review’s The Corner group blog,, Steyn was chatting with Yaval Levin about GM’s plans for revival and a reported concept of the GM Puma, a partnership between the makers of tough trucks Segway.
