US “surprised” at election of Benedict - Wikileaks

Rome Reports | 01 December 2010
Apparently, not even the sophisticated U.S. intelligence services were able to penetrate the walls of the Sistine Chapel.

A voice from Sydney

George Pell | 19 April 2010
Cardinal George Pell, of Sydney, must know better than almost anyone else in the Catholic Church about the problem of sex abuse. He helped set up a rigorous system to deal with it in Australia. Then he himself was falsely accused. He stepped aside as Archbishop of Melbourne until he was completely exonerated by an independent judge. In this video he reflects on the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict.

Fifth Anniversary

Michael Cook | 19 April 2010
Today is the fifth anniversary of the election of Joseph Ratzinger to the Papacy. His critics say that these five years have been a public relations disaster which has brought the Catholic Church to the brink of collapse. The dissident theologian Hans Küng says that the Church is “in the worst credibility crisis since the Reformation”.

How is he handling it?

Is Benedict the problem or the solution?

Michael Cook | 05 April 2010
Another straw in the wind? It may be becoming clear to the media – at least to more open-minded journalists – that Benedict XVI is the solution, not the problem, to the crisis of sex abuse in the Church. As Archbishop Vincent Nichols told the BBC in London, "The pope won't resign. Frankly, there's no strong reason for him to do so. In fact it's the other way around: he is the one above all else in Rome who has tackled these things head on."

Lull in the storm

Michael Cook | 05 April 2010
Is the tide of opinion turning? An editorial in Monday’s London Telegraph points out that although Pope Benedict did not directly mention the sex abuse scandal in his Easter Sunday sermon, “we know what he thinks of the scandal from his pastoral letter to Irish Catholics a fortnight ago”.

Feel good stuff for Easter
