The U.S. bishops issued their annual Labor Day statement, written by Bishop William Murphy, Chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development. Bottom line: whatever social contract existed with American workers in the past, we need to revisit it now.

It would re-set the roiling controversy surrounding the Church considerably if those who have been attacking its handling of the abuse crisis would admit they have strong anti-Church sentiments to begin with, and then get on with a passionate debate about it all.

The Catholic divide over congressional health care  legislation has widened. A few days ago as the decisive week began, the U.S. bishops took another stand against the proposed wording. And a large group of Catholic nuns took a stand against the Catholic bishops’. Confusion abounds. Because what people learn about their positions depends largely on what they’re hearing in the media. And that’s getting pretty distorted.
