Bernard Toutounji

Bernard Toutounji is an Australian writer, speaker and educator.  He holds a Bachelor of Theology from the Catholic Institute of Sydney and a Master of Theology from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family, Melbourne. He is undertaking further studies at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, Sydney and through the Theology of the Body Institute, Pennsylvania, USA.

Bernard has a particular interest in questions of anthropology, morality and truth. He writes a fortnightly column, www.foolishwisdom.com, which is published in The Record newspaper in Perth and he has had articles published in both print and online journals including The Punch, Online Opinion and MercatorNet. Bernard tutors in theology at a university level and has co-authored a book titled Family and Human Life.

It may seem on face value that Australia is serious about stamping out abuse but I wonder just how serious we really are. While all these sorts of campaigns are of some value they fall into the interesting category of a secular government trying to teach morality.

What accounts for this decline in families eating together today though? The data seems to point to two main issues: Overworked parents and overscheduled children. When mum and dad get home in the evening they are soon in the car again to whisk the children off to sport, music, tutoring, church activities and a host of other events.

Before proposing we were just a couple of teenagers hanging out and in an instant we had become adults! I have realised that being engaged does not fill you with some upgraded type of love, the love you have continues, but with a new, more serious goal in sight.

However, my assertion is that far more is to be gained by never playing electronic games than mastering such games and then looking for the supposed benefits.
