Life lessons from The Princess Bride

I wrote this post for my personal style blog, but it got so many great comments and responses I wanted to share it here too.

The Princess Bride is the most quoted movie in my family, followed closely by While You Were Sleeping and then Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Of these three classic gems The Princess Bride will win out every time in a viewing war. The movie celebrated its 25th anniversary a couple weeks ago! This fact had me thinking about the multiple life-lessons, especially of the quotable kind that the movie provides. Without further ado...

Life Lessons from The Princess Bride:

  • Doggedly pursue your life's goal - 'Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.'
  • Fight for what you believe in, even if the odds are against you. - 'Look, are you just fiddling around with me or what?'
  • Hold on to Love. - 'Hear this now: I will always come for you... This is true love - you think this happens every day?'
  • Lies are for cowards. - 'We are men of action, lies do not become us.'
  • Have faith in the impossible. - 'HE DIDN'T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE.' ... 'You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.'
  • Revenge isn't the answer. - 'There's not a lot of money in revenge.' and ' Is very strange. I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.'
  • Pride comes before the fall. - 'Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? Morons!'
  • Life is not always a walk in the park. - 'Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.'
  • Just because no one has, doesn't mean you can't.  - 'Nonsense. You're onlysaying that because no one ever has.'
  • Rejoice in the small accomplishments.  - My brains, his steel, and your strength against sixty men, and you think a little head-jiggle is supposed to make me happy?
  • Pain is always a part of love. - 'You truly love each other and so you might have been truly happy. Not one couple in a century has that chance, no matter what the story books say. And so I think no man in a century will suffer as greatly as you will.' and 'His true love is marrying another tonight, so who else has the cause for ultimate suffering?'
  • Brevity is the soul of wit. - 'Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. Buttercup is marry Humperdink in little less then half an hour so all we have to do is get in, break up the wedding, steal the princess, make our escape, after I kill count Rugen.'
