Mateo, Ruby and Corey cannot understand why their parents are so strict about never using the NYC subway without an adult. Public transportation is a way of life in the Big Apple.

One morning they awake to find their parents have gone to work early, so they decide to bend the rules to save time and hop on the 6 train – or so they think. All kinds of unusual people live in Manhattan, but a man in a cape and his pet rat seem out of place even in “the city that never sleeps”. Before they can exit, the subway car turns into a first class train traveling to Paris – in 1911. Clearly this is no ordinary subway! Captain Vincent, owner of the rat, convinces the children to accompany him and his band of orphans on a time traveling adventure to protect famous artifacts, promising that they can go home whenever they like. Time travel is a tricky thing, however, and Mateo suspects there is more to this mysterious man than he is admitting.

This first book in Liesl Shurtliff’s new series is action packed and full of suspense. The plot contains many loose ends that presumably will be resolved in sequels. One disappointing moment occurs when the children visit the Captain’s library and Corey is praised for reading comic books rather than literature. That said, young readers who love fantasy will enjoy this book and will look forward to the next installment due out in October.
