13-year-old becomes fashion icon, critic

As the fashion weeks begin to happen in quick succession throughout the world, fashionistas follow the trends, the frills, the designers, the colors… and now everyone is watching a little 13-year-old girl. Tavi Gevinson (and her Style Rookie blog) is taking the fashion industry by storm.

When her blog first popped up in March 2008, people thought a fashion insider or professional in the field was writing it. She had insights and offered analysis that appeared well beyond her 11 years. But she’s no insider. Tavi is a high school student. She lives in a little suburb of Chicago, IL.

Her daily clothing choices look more she hopped off the runway at a Rodarte show than if she was headed to a high school science class. When asked, she describes herself as a “tiny 13 year old dork that sits inside all day wearing awkward jackets and pretty hats.” Earlier this month she dyed her short dish-water blonde hair an icy-blue color, inspired by magazine ads she had been looking at recently.

And now the 13-year-old has risen to new heights. She’s gone from attending classes at her local high school to sitting in the front row at last week’s Couture Fashion Show in Paris.

Personally, I love this. Sure, she dresses uniquely in outfits most people would never be caught dead in. And now her hair is an ice blue tint that would make most people cringe or at least glance twice. But, it’s refreshing that a 13-year-old with a passion for fashion can cause such a quiet stir.

Her presence at the fashion shows this year proves three things. First: The fashion industry is hungry for new perspective. Second: One single person can make a resounding impact on the world when she utilizes the talents she’s given. Third: Blogging has become a serious means of communication throughout the world.
