‘An enormous and growing need for family planning’

A report from the population control movement -- Making the Case for US International Family Planning Assistance -- is urging the Obama administration to “restore US leadership in global family planning” by more than doubling funds for USAID programs from the 2008 level of $457 million to $1.5 billion by 2014, reports PRB. The report says USAID’s “international population assistance program” has been “woefully underfunded for the last eight years”.

One of the authors of the report insists that “family planning” is a fundamental human right, empowering women, saving lives and contributing to development. According to PRB many people wrongly think that population growth has halted. On the contrary, it says, there is “an enormous and growing need for family planning”. It obviously expects a lot from the new regime in Washington. ~ PRB, January 2009
