To be honest, nine times out of ten I dislike the articles featured on Yahoo. They are usually superficial, poorly written and even a little behind the times. But the other day one article on cheerleaders demanding their uniforms be more substantial caught my attention. What? High school girls standing up for the ridiculous looking costumes they are asked to don in the name of school spirit and sportsmanship – crazy cool!

Cheerleaders at Bridgeport Central in Connecticut have asked that their uniforms not be so revealing. One of the girls, Ariana Mesaros. is quoted saying "It really hurts our self esteem. I am embarrassed to stand up here dressed like this. Is this really how you want Bridgeport to be represented?"

Bravo girls! Would that more teenagers take your lead and start making a difference. All it takes is one person to start the idea rolling. I can just imagine it… A couple of the girls sitting around one Friday night, watching a movie eating popcorn and talking about school, boys and cheerleading. One of them has the guts to mention the inappropriateness of their uniforms, another chimes up in agreement and suddenly they are starting a movement. Suddenly they are affecting change. Suddenly they are featured on Yahoo News.

In just the few short years since I have been out of high school I have seen high school sports uniforms change, dramatically in some cases and subtly in others. For example, volleyball uniforms used to be your basic sports t-shirt fitted but not tight with a matching pair of loose sports shorts. Now most high schools have tight tank tops and shorts that look more like underwear than an actual article of clothing. It’s easier to move in, coaches argue. If that is so… why aren’t the guys teams put in those ‘easy-to-move-in’ shorts?
