Here in New Zealand, our roots are Christian and public holidays commemorate Christian calendar dates such as Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  On Good Friday, my husband and I attended our beautiful local Church for the 3pm service and were forced to sit on the floor at the back it was so packed.  However, even in countries where Christianity is a minority religion, it is passionately celebrated.

• In India a procession of Christians from all walks of life march the streets acting out the Passion – they account for 2.3 percent of India’s huge population of over 1 billion which is predominantly Hindu.  Nuns help the many homeless.
• Indonesian Christians re-enact the crucifixion of Christ – they make up only 3% of the predominantly Muslim population.
• In Pakistan Christians crowd into a Church to attend mass.  There Christianity is the largest minority religion after Hinduism, but makes up only 1.6% of the population.
• In Jerusalem’s Old City, hundreds of Christian carry wooden crosses through ancient cobblestone alleyways.

If you are in a Christian country like I am, I hope you enjoy this time to reflect, pray, eat easter eggs and be with friends and family.  Although, it seems that even those Christians who are not in traditionally Christian countries (and I assume do not get time off work) are finding plenty of time for prayer and reflection.  Happy Easter!
