The key to a great wardrobe, for both guys and girls, is the ability to mix and match the various items in order to create new looks with the same pieces. Some people are better at this than others, so if you aren’t sure what goes together and what doesn’t find a friend who does and go through your closet with him/her. This is more focused toward a young professional trying to create his/her wardrobe.

The key elements:

 - A pair or two of great basic dress pants. Think navy, black, brown, gray, khaki. These can be mixed with endless amounts of tops. (for women, try substituting a pair of pants for a pencil skirt.)

- A pair of dark jeans. These are perfect for more casual days at work, a night out, a casual holiday party, etc…

- A couple button-down shirts. White is always a safe bet and it goes with everything. Or try a subtle pattern that can easily go with your jeans and basic pants.

- A handful of nice cotton shirts. Again stick to basic colors but look for things that have a little detailing that make it stand out. Maybe there is a little fancy stitch work or sleeve detailing.

- A tailored jacket. These are in for both men and women right now and are a wardrobe essential. Thrown over even a basic t-shirt, the jacket steps up the whole look and gives a professional but stylish edge to any outfit.

- Two pairs of great shoes. Think of what will go with your clothing choices, but here is a good place to insert some of your own personality.

- Accessories that bring out your personal style. (Guys don’t call it that, but you’ve got accessories too.) A scarf for the ladies or the bold guy. A patterned tie for the men, a statement necklace for the women.

In truth it is the addition of accessories that will create different outfits. For instance, a lady’s look will differ significantly based on the type of scarf she throws on and the way she ties it. Substitute that scarf for a necklace and there is a while other outfit and combine a scarf with a necklace will give you a third look using the same top and bottom combination.
