In 2009 voters in Maine overturned by 53 to 47 percent a state law that would have allowed same-sex marriage. This week the Maine electorate reversed that vote, answering “Yes” to the question "Do you want to allow the State of Maine to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?" by 54 to 46 percent.
What happened? A lot of things, but the video below probably identifies the key factor: two-and half years of targeted door knocking and “persuasion conversations” by over 1500 foot-soldiers, reaching 250,000 people… Very scientific. It no doubt cost a lot, too - or were these all volunteers with day jobs?
