There hasn’t been coverage lately of the efforts to rescue the Chilean miners trapped underground, nor of their efforts to deal with such duress while waiting for a rescue that could take a couple more months. But even though news crews largely moved off to other stories, the human drama at the center of this story doesn’t depend on reporters to cover it.

It is amazing.

The miners have endured sweltering conditions for weeks, and the discipline and resiliency they have shown through their ordeal has been a point of pride among Chileans — perhaps especially so as the nation celebrates the bicentennial of its independence Saturday.

The miners celebrated the bicentennial Thursday, with beef and empanadas, and they decorated their chamber with a plastic Chilean flag.

Their resiliency and nobility have been a point of pride for humanity, and so we’re all Chileans in the respect that the world experiences crises as one.

These men are amazing. In the earlier coverage, they reportedly asked for materials to erect a makeshift shrine down there, trapped in their mineshaft. Their ability to practice their faith reinforces it and sustains them. And it unites us all.
