Why so many voters support Donald Trump: a letter to baffled non-Americans

Many friends and associates overseas are bewildered by what is happening in the United States.

They can’t understand the vitriol and outright violence that has engulfed American political life, and how so many otherwise sane Americans not only support Donald Trump but do so enthusiastically.

A quick word of explanation, then. As someone who did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016 (I wrote in the prolife libertarian Rand Paul) but plans to in 2020, I think I can provide some context.

The first thing you have to understand is that, for tens of millions of ordinary working Americans, the two-party system is broken. A sense of disenfranchisement has been growing for decades.

Many Americans, both liberals and conservatives, believe that the two major political parties are utterly indifferent to their real concerns and are merely tools of big multinational corporations.

Virtually all of the organs of modern American society now speak with a single, increasingly intolerant and authoritarian voice – the media, “woke” corporations, universities, the judiciary, even parts of the military.

That’s why an astonishing 62 percent of Americans now say they hold political views they are afraid to express in public.

Thus, for many Americans a vote for Donald Trump is a vote for freedom -- and against the authoritarian bureaucrats and cancel culture commissars who now openly terrorize innocent people and make public life so threatening.

Sceptical of the media

The second thing non-Americans must understand is how utterly discredited the corporate media have become in the eyes of ordinary Americans.

Conservatives have long complained about “liberal bias” among the smug media class, but the election of Donald Trump revealed just how deep and widespread that bias really is.

Americans are shocked, on an almost daily basis, by the amount of overt political propaganda they must now endure from the major television and cable networks, the prestige press and the tightly controlled social media and search engines of the tech billionaires.

The talking heads on CNN, MSNBC, and the major TV networks display a public hatred for Donald Trump that borders on the insane – and there is a huge disconnect between what the media claim Donald Trump says and what Americans can see, with their own eyes, he actually says.

Here's just one example apropos of the election. In 2017, the major networks edited video remarks that Trump made about a demonstration that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, concerning the removal of statutes of Confederate generals.

In two heated press conferences, Trump said that there were good people on both sides of the debate over Confederate statutes – as there are -- and he then condemned unequivocally and repeatedly the violent outsiders, neo-Nazis and Antifa thugs, who came to the demonstration looking for trouble.

“Racism is evil,” Trump said in remarks on August 14, 2017. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Despite this unequivocal denunciation, the media and the Democrats have falsely claimed on an almost daily basis that Donald Trump call neo-Nazis and white supremacists “very fine people.”

In fact, Trump’s political opponent, Joe Biden, claims the reason why he decided to run for president was because Trump called white supremacists “very fine people.” This was and remains a flat-out lie that is perpetuated deliberately by a corrupt media class.

Thus, as preposterous as it may sound given Trump’s penchant for exaggeration and sarcasm, a vote for Donald Trump is a vote for truth against the overt political propaganda of the corporate media.

Sore losers

The third thing non-Americans must understand is the degree to which Trump’s opposition, the far-left of the Democratic Party, has been willing to subvert the norms of democratic government to get their way – in effect, refusing the accept the results of a legitimate election that they lost.

This, more than anything else, explains why tens of millions of Americans continue to support Trump despite his many obvious failings.

Had the Democrats simply accepted the election, quietly went home as loyal Americans are expected to do, and then made their case against Trump in the 2020 election, I have no doubt that Trump would lose.

But they didn’t do that.

From the very moment they lost, the Democrats made it clear that they would do everything in their power to overturn the results of the 2016 election through a slow-motion “soft coup.”

Top officials of America’s powerful intelligence and law enforcement agencies, the CIA and FBI, submitted doctored evidence they knew was false to the secret FISA court in order to obtain warrants to illegally spy on Donald Trump’s political campaign.

Just last week, documents were declassified that show Barack Obama himself knew about a scheme among the Clinton campaign and top officials at the FBI to falsely portray Donald Trump as a Russian agent – a claim that led to the three-year investigation by a special prosecutor, dozens of Congressional investigations, and a full-blown attempt at impeachment.

Days before the 2020 election, the head of the Democrats, House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, introduced a new bill to establish a Congressional commission to consider when a president can be removed from office due to alleged incapacity, based on the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Americans are weary of these endless schemes by Democrats to circumvent the normal workings of governmentabolishing the Electoral College, packing the Supreme Court, creating unconstitutional commissions to remove presidents.

Thus, they see a vote for Donald Trump is a vote for democracy itself, for allowing the people to express their will at the ballot box, rightly or wrongly, and against the undemocratic, increasingly authoritarian efforts of far-left progressives and their allies in the media to overturn democratic elections.

The increasing use of political violence by members of the far leftterrorizing ordinary voters in restaurants and their homes – also contributes to increasing support for Trump.

And the winner will be …

In conclusion, therefore, a prediction. The corporate media are now virtually unanimous in claiming that Donald Trump is about to lose in “an epic landslide.” Every day, Americans are subjected to new banner headlines and a new paid media poll that predicts a stunning Trump defeat.

This is a sure sign that the media class is now secretly terrified that they are going to lose.

Ordinary Americans know that the feeble Joe Biden will likely not live another year, and that the far-left and very unpopular Kamala Harris will be president if Trump loses.

Despite the best efforts of Democrats to steal the election through the use of mail-in ballots, the recruitment of 600,000 “poll watchers” and other questionable tactics, internal polling not controlled by the media reveals it is Trump who is, in fact, likely headed for another huge victory.

In one of the few polls not controlled by Trump-hating media corporations, the Gallup organization last week revealed that an astonishing 56 percent of the people said they were better off today than they were four years ago.

They said this in the midst of worst health crisis in a century, when millions of Americans are unemployed due to lockdowns and the economy is struggling.

When Barack Obama went on to win reelection in 2012, the number who said they were better off was only 45 percent.

Donald Trump is about to pull off another historic upset because tens of millions of ordinary Americans refuse to do what the media and tech billionaires command.

They prefer the orange devil they know, with all his many faults, to the violent extremism, race-baiting and uncertainty of a Kamala Harris administration.
